Over 13 years professional climbing experience. Hopefully some of these pictures and descriptions will help answer some questions. Also help you get to know us, our tree service equipment, quality of work and some techniques we use.
Having the right team and proper training is essential. These guys are some of the hardest working people you'll ever meet. Old Town Tree Care loves long term employees. That is why we offer competative wages and bonuses. There is always room for advancement. Being a top rated tree service in Winchester, VA takes a top rated crew.
Affectionately dubbed Bobby The Bobcat. This little machine can seriously handle some weight. It is smaller and lighter than larger machines. It's purpose is to access compact areas and also cause less damage to yards. This machine is one of our secrets to success. It cuts down on amount of time cutting and amount of smaller debris to tidy up. It saves our backs and our time, which save customers money. If the yard conditions are poor we also have Alterna Mats that we can place down to further protect the areas we wrok in.
Sometimes it is better to hire a professional tree service to do clearance work on your beloved tree. Often local cities, power companies and telecommunication vendors will do this service for free at their discretion. The common motto is "clearance not appearance". Those guys work hard and get the job done but sometimes at the exspense of tree health and overall looks. If it is a dead tree over powerlines by all means call and report it. If you're lucky they will come out promptly and remove the tree at no cost.
Old Town Tree has humble beginings along a lot of elbow grease, frustrations and mechanic bills. In the begining making do with what we had was our only option. Having built and established the business enough to finance new equipment was a huge milestone for us. Now having more reliable vehicles and equipment has only made us more efficient.
We have only our customers to thank for our acheivments. Our new trucks and chippers are top of the line. Rolling around in style not only makes Old Town Tree look good but also was a huge Morale boost. We have not changed our great low rates as a result of these new purchases. Our business models reamins the same. Affordable cost and high volume.
This was Old Town Tree's first dump truck. We had a lot of help and fun building it. This is also the chipper we started with. We pulled it out of a field and put quite a lot of work into it as well. We have come a long waysince those days. We stay extremely grateful to our customers new and old for making our success possible!
Just some fun Old Town Tree shirts. If you want one just ask. We get them every quarter. First come first serve. We do free estimates and we give out free shirts as well. A shipment went down to some Marines in Camp Lagoon. Proud to have Marines repping our Old Town Tree swag. Also had some go to California for some surfers dudes to rock and even some stock brokers in New York. People seem to like like these shirts and we like to give them away. Old Town apparel has made it to several mountain peaks and been worn all across these great United States.
My mentor Joel Nolting took this picture of me pruning a tree over a church playgroud. We were removing dead, dangerous and hazardous limbs for safety. We both remember the children doing the daycare program watching from the windows wide eyed.
I took this picture years ago of my mentor. We were pruning limbs overhanging a roofline. Even though I am looking at him on the same plane in this photo, I will always be looking up to him. I used this as our first cover photo. Just paying respect to this legend.
Jeff and I were doing removals on several very large Pine trees. We used the opposites tree to rig and lower large blocks of wood. It's always fun doing tree work with another experienced arborist and professional tree climber.
Removing a Pine tree in Winchester VA. Always have time to stop and take pic. A customer actually took this and sent it to me. A lot of customer like to be present and hands on with us. We like the interactions and when we notice them filming we ham it up for the cameras. About 1/3 of our photos published are from customers located right here in the Winchester area!
Teaching Brian to climb and Fell trees here locally in Winchester Virginia. Tree care is a way of life to us at Old Town Tree and Landscaping. We aspire to learn and teach all we can to offer the best possible experience for our customers and their trees!
Coy cutting up wood at Old Town Tree Service in Winchester VIrginia. first we cut all the limbs off to be proccessed through the wood chipper. Then we cut up the wood to be moved and hauled away. As previously mentioned sometime customers keep the wood to be burned for heat or ambiance fires. 90% of the wood we do haul away gets taking to someone to be used as firewood at no charge to them. Usually a former customer or one of our local firehalls. This saves money on dump fees and since we have so many free dumpsites this is another way we keep our prices affordable.
Unforetunitly this tree totaled a home after a hurricane. It was the estimated well over 70,000 lbs and several hundred years old. I did this tree with another company and it is still to date the largest tree I have ever worked on.
Richie cutting a tree after being felled. He has several horse pens with dying trees in them. The constant weight of the horses over time had compacted the soil. This has affected the trees ability to absorb water because the ground is so hard. In turn damaging the roots system and the tree's ability to transport nutrients.
Did This large Oak removal with a not so large saw. Tree work is often a make do type of industry. Fortunately I have invested in the right equipment and people that this reality is minimized but even still we improvise quite often. I've always thought that tree work is so costly because of the amount of equipment that malfunctions and breaks. This is a rough trade and everything gets abused including our bodies. It is also a specialized skill that requires specialized workers.
Dropping big blocks of wood during an Oak removal in Winchester Virginia. When there is a clear drop zone and nothing to damage below, we let it fly. Or as one of my old coworkers used to say "let er rip tater chip". It's silly but I often think that phrase in my mind when doing this after hearing it so often.
Weight reduction pruning without spikes can be tricky but is better for tree health. What made this job very tricky was all the ornamental trees beneath it. Not a single ornamental tree was harmed in the making of this photo.
When doing crane removal jobs sometimes the crane operator will let a climber ride the ball to be placed in the tree to save time and energy. Cranes and operators are contracted for very specific jobs sometimes including emergency storm jobs. They carry a hefty price to rent but also can carry a hefty load and are required to minimize further damage. They are also used during large tree removals in tight areas with limited access.
This was one of the first trees I pruned. I'd be lying if I said I wan't a little nervous at the time. I had to learn to prune trees the proper way and for this I am appreciative. One thing I was taught was to never use climbing spikes on a live tree. It can spread diseases and creates unnecessary wounds on the tree. I am proud to say that to date I can count the live trees I have spiked on 1 hand and they were done for specific reasons.
Spiking up a tree to be removed in Winchester VA. We prune as many trees as we remove and even plant new ones every year. The tree pruning pictures never seem to be as cool and that is why they get less attention. It's hard to take a clear photo from the ground through the live canopy. Also the view from up top looking down is restricted as well.
Proper pruning cuts are important for tree health. At Old Town Tree we care about trees. There has actually been new research that supports a diiferent mnethod to proper finishing cuts on Oak trees. We will, as always, stay current on proper methods of tree care and adjust accordingly. We stay adaptive and are always eager to learn any advancement in the field of tree care.
Large Hickory Tree pruning in Winchester VA at Old Town Tree and Landscaping. Proper tree pruning should consist of removing dead limbs. Healthy crown cleaning and reduction to promote new growth. Some interior reduction so air and sun can properly get to the tree. Sometimes elevation and clearance from/for structures, views and other objects like power lines. After that it's really up to the climbing arborist's discretion. Tree Pruning is truly a science and an art form. Mostly scince though Tree Biology is real just ask Dr. Alex Shigo.
This tree was damaged and dangerous and needed to be removed by tree experts at Old Town Tree and Landscaping of Winchester Virginia. We had to block of a lane of traffic to complete this hazardous tree removal. Part of it had already fallen and damaged a vehicle.
Technical climb at my now Mother in Law's old house. Everything had to be lowered because of all the stonework. I am still doing tree work for her, which would not be the case if I had damaged those bricks.
Part of being a tree care proffesional is practicing proper safety techniques. Wearing a helmet and being visible is very important. Also wearing eye and ear protection. Having good communication with team memebers around as well.
Much respect to this man here. He is the one who kick started this whole operation. I had the dream and trade skills but not the courage. If it wasn't for him there would be no Old Town Tree. Thanks Coy!!! Also glad youare still wearing Old Town Tree gear on your adventures.
This is how we condence the tree limbs. In this case we were chipping back into the woods. Leaving chips makes the best soil for that area. The tree grew in that soil and is made of it so when is breaks down and returns to the earth is is already aclimated to the conditions. This is one reason we are not allowed to remove wood from national forests. Another reason is they do not want people destroying land to access the wood. When leaving chips make sure to not spread them too close to trees as they can damage the exsisting tree.
This is where a lot of our wood chips end up. It is a dump for larger land clearing companies. They process the chips again and turn it into mulch. Sometimes they ship loads of chips to power plants to be burned for fuel. We also deliver the chips to local tree nurserys. They let them sit and then use them to heel in new tree deliveries. We are always happy to give away loads to anyone that calls and asks. A lot of people use them for long term home permaculture projects. Chips can be used directly as mulch as is but they need to sit for a period before they can be spread. Fresh wood chips have different acid contents and when applied immediately can suck nitrates out of the already exsisting soil. This can damage and even kill trees and plants.
Old Town Tree humbly receives all sorts of gifts. Home grown fruits and veggies, gift cards, wine, cards and letters, and even a treadmill one time; just to name a few. It is always a nice treat to see that we are liked and doing a good job. This is probably my personal favorite gift. Hand painted saw with our company name.
Was on the fence about advising to remove this Majestic Oak tree. Afterwards I think we made the right decision. Trees can live with large cavities but sometimes when they are close to a home it is better to remove them. Even though they still bloom and look healthy they can still have structural issues.
If you can't tell by now we like to have fun at Old Town Tree. I actually got to work on a monster Poplar tree named Ben. A customer saw this photo. They said they had found the right tree care service since I shared names with Ben the tree.
Storm damage and emergency tree work is always an unfortunate part of being a tree service. We believe in affordability no matter the situation. Old Town Tree worked with another tree service located in Winchester on this one. Sometimes it takes specialized equipment and combined efforts to provide the right service for these unique tree problems. If we are unable to complete tasks we will be the first to refer a customer towards the best and safest solution. In this case Another tree company had a crane available. It actually saved money from renting and the job was done very quickly with twice the man power.
