Pretty excited to have Old Town Tree Service make an appearance in the Winchester Star!
We were removing dying and hazardous trees along Millwood Ave and the Winchester Star came by again!!
Old Town Tree has won this award several years in a row. It is such an honor to be recognized by the community! We appreciate all of our wonderful customers and amazing employees!
Ascending a tree to be pruned. Proper tree pruning is essential. When done correctly it can greatly benifit a tree's health. Never top and never spike a tree during pruning.
If we are being honest Arborist Patrick Fitch did this removal while I was out of town. Patrick is an amazing climber and human being. I did get back in time to take this photo and move the wood.
The Bobcat is everyone's favorite coworker. This little machine get in some tight areas and can handle some serious wood.
This is the machine we use to grind stumps. Stump grinding requires a separate specialized machine. This is why we itemized stump removals separately on the estimates.
Having the right team and proper training is essential. These guys are some of the hardest working people you'll ever meet. Old Town Tree Care loves long term employees. That is why we offer competative wages and bonuses. There is always room for advancement. Being a top rated tree service in Winchester, VA takes a top rated crew.
Climbing through ivy is an absolute pain. Ivy can choke and can strangulate a tree's Xylem and Pholem. This can serious damage a tree as it depletes the tree's ability to transport resources.

Unforetunitly this tree totaled a home after a hurricane. It was the estimated well over 70,000 lbs and several hundred years old. I did this tree with another company and it is still to date the largest tree I have ever worked on.
This tree was located in a horse pen. The constant weight of the horses compacted the soil. This killed the tree and made it hazardous.
Did This large Oak removal with a not so large saw. Tree work is often a make do type of industry. Fortunately I have invested in the right equipment and people that this reality is minimized but even still we improvise quite often. I've always thought that tree work is so costly because of the amount of equipment that malfunctions and breaks. This is a rough trade and everything gets abused including our bodies. It is also a specialized skill that requires specialized workers.
Climber Brian at Old Town Tree reaching new heights during his training years.
Coy of Old Town Tree in Winchester VA pruning a tree. It takes a lot of strength and finesse for a man that large to get up a tree without spikes. Watch out squirrels!
Weight reduction pruning without spikes can be tricky but is better for tree health. What made this job very tricky was all the ornamental trees beneath it. Not a single ornamental tree was harmed in the making of this photo.
When doing crane removal jobs sometimes the crane operator will let a climber ride the ball to be placed in the tree to save time and energy. Cranes and operators are contracted for very specific jobs sometimes including emergency storm jobs. They carry a hefty price to rent but also can carry a hefty load and are required to minimize further damage. They are also used during large tree removals in tight areas with limited access.
Another little tree removal at Old Town Tree in Winchester, Virginia.
Spiking up a tree to be removed in Winchester VA. We prune as many trees as we remove and even plant new ones every year. The tree pruning pictures never seem to be as cool and that is why they get less attention. It's hard to take a clear photo from the ground through the live canopy. Also the view from up top looking down is restricted as well.
This tree was damaged and dangerous and needed to be removed by tree experts at Old Town Tree and Landscaping of Winchester Virginia. We had to block of a lane of traffic to complete this hazardous tree removal. Part of it had already fallen and damaged a vehicle.
Technical climb at my now Mother in Law's old house. Everything had to be lowered because of all the stonework. I am still doing tree work for her, which would not be the case if I had damaged those bricks.
This Maple tree was pretty big and had tons of metal in it. It was a very hot and frustrating day.
Part of being a tree care proffesional is practicing proper safety techniques. Wearing a helmet and being visible is very important. Also wearing eye and ear protection. Having good communication with team memebers around as well.
Much respect to this man here. He is the one who kick started this whole operation. I had the dream and trade skills but not the courage. If it wasn't for him there would be no Old Town Tree. Thanks Coy!!! Also glad youare still wearing Old Town Tree gear on your adventures.
Everyone stays busy at Old Town Tree. Once the tree hits the ground the real work begins. Plenty of work to go around during lot clearing jobs.
This is where a lot of our wood chips end up. It is a dump for larger land clearing companies. They process the chips again and turn it into mulch. Sometimes they ship loads of chips to power plants to be burned for fuel. We also deliver the chips to local tree nurserys. They let them sit and then use them to heel in new tree deliveries. We are always happy to give away loads to anyone that calls and asks. A lot of people use them for long term home permaculture projects. Chips can be used directly as mulch as is but they need to sit for a period before they can be spread. Fresh wood chips have different acid contents and when applied immediately can suck nitrates out of the already exsisting soil. This can damage and even kill trees and plants.
Was on the fence about advising to remove this Majestic Oak tree. Afterwards I think we made the right decision. Trees can live with large cavities but sometimes when they are close to a home it is better to remove them. Even though they still bloom and look healthy they can still have structural issues.

Removing bigger trees can be a challenging and fun. Picking the right pose to show off tree's diameter is always up for debate.
This was a large tree removal we took on recently. It was one of the oldest trees we have seen in awhile. It had become very unsafe and was in severe decline.
Had to grind some stump at the hospital. No one told me to wear this. No one told me i couldn't either though.
