So I get this question all the time. Is my tree worth anything? The short answer is no. Tree the grow in yards, AKA "yard logs", do not grow the same as trees the grow in the woods. They do not grow tall and straight and often have braches lower to the base. This is becasue the get more sun and require more protection. There is also more of a chance that they have metal in them. Logs are graded based on many different factors. For example Black Walnut trees have diiferent amounts of sapwood. ...

Spotted Lantern Fly and Ailanthus Trees

Posted on August 22, 2020 at 9:25 PM Comments comments (1)

Spotted Lantern Fly is yet another threat to our local trees. It is an invasive species from Eastern Asia. Its main attraction is to the Ailanthus tree or " tree of Heaven or Paradise". This tree is so miscommonly identified as Sumac that a common name for it has become Chinese Sumac. 90% percent of people I run into think they have a Sumac tree. The problem is that these tree spread some many seed pods so rapidly and that they grow so fast. They in turn get into our natural hardwoo...

We have made do and learned to be partial mechanics. Also how to adapt and deal with down times. Old Town Tree and Landscaping built a tree house. A couple of my neighbors wanted a tree fort/deer stand/hang out spot. We normally focus on our tree removal and tree pruning thing. It was hard to pass up this fun oppertunity though. It sits about 35' in the air and is structurally sound. It sways with the wind and hopefully will expand with the tree's growth. There is even a wood stove with a chimeny that directs smoke an additional 15' up and away from the roof. I hope they enjoy this adven...

PLEASE NEVER TOP TREES

Posted on June 29, 2017 at 6:25 PM Comments comments (2)

Topping trees is an outdated practice that is extremly detrimental to a tree's health. It sends the tree into a shocked state that draws resources in an unnatural way. Often times ppl are trying to control or manage a tree's height or size. When trees are topped they may look managable but they look terrible. Then within the next few years multiple unnatural limbs ...

Heavy pruning of big Oaks

Posted on June 18, 2017 at 7:00 PM Comments comments (1)

The best time to prune witl always be in the Fall/Winter. That being said most people call for pruning in the Spring/Summer when the foliage is out. Trees have expended lots of energy producing this foliage and on new growth. It takes energy to heal cuts made by arborists. Energy they don't always have to expend in warmer months. Warmer months are also when insects are most active. They are attracted to the fresh cuts and sometimes carry diseases. If pruning is done in these months it should ...

Root barrier installation

I love it when a customer chooses to do something that will keep their favorite tree healthy when removal seems like the only option. I have had several customers concernced about the roots of their trees doing damage to the foundation of their homes. I was called to do removals and stump grinding. Root barrier systems are a great way to protect a homes foundation from large tree roots that are too close. It is pretty easy to install but does require some knowledge. this is not always a viabl...
